Maths

At our school we use the White Rose scheme of learning to plan and teach our progressive maths curriculum.  We use a range of resources to support children in developing fluency, reasoning and problem-solving.

Our teachers use a concrete, pictorial and abstract approach (CPA) which enables children to learn maths through the use of practical equipment, images and written recorded methods.

In our school we aim for all children to be confident and capable in maths before moving on to secondary school.  Every day, our children start their maths lesson with a daily dashboard which includes remembering key learning from previous lessons, rehearsing arithmetic facts and embedding our chosen maths facts.

You can see a copy of our whole school maths facts overview and whole school arithmetic below.

All children from years 2 to 6 have an individual log in for Time Table Rock Stars (TTRS) please click here to access the website and log in:  Times Tables Rock Stars – Times Tables Rock Stars (ttrockstars.com)  We would encourage all children in these year groups to log in at least 3 times each week to help them learn their times tables and division facts.

All children from Reception to year 3 have an individual log in Numbots which supports children in learning key mathematical knowledge in the early years, key stage 1 and lower key stage 2.  Please click here to access the website and log in:  NumBots | Motivational maths practice for schools and families.  We encourage all children in these year groups to log in at least 3 times each week.

Phonics and Reading Schemes

At our school we follow the Little Wandle phonics scheme and all our individual reading books in Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 are matched accordingly.

Little Wandle have produced this handy webpage guide for parents which tells you all about what phonics is:

Key vocabulary that you may find useful:
Phoneme The sound that is heard
Grapheme The written representation of the sound
Diagraph Two letters that make a single sound e.g. ‘oa’ as in goat
Trigraph Three letters that make a single sound e.g. ‘igh’ as in light
Split diagraph When two letter make a single sound but are not consecutive in a word – this is always a vowel followed by the letter e e.g. a_e as in cake, e_e as in Pete, i_e as in bike, o_e as in woke, u_e as in flute.
Blending

Identifying the individual sounds and combining them to read the word

e.g. b-oa-t

Segmenting

Listening for the sounds in words gives children the best start for improving spelling

CVC

A word made of the sequence: consonant, vowel, consonant e.g. cat

CCVC/CVCC

A word made of the sequence: consonant, consonant, vowel, consonant e.g. stop

Or

A word made of the sequence:  consonant, vowel, consonant, consonant  e.g. pond

How to say the Phase 5 Sounds

Phonics in Year 1:

The main focus in year one is phase 5.  Children entering Phase Five will already be able to read and spell words with adjacent consonants, such as trap, string and flask. They will also be able to read and spell some polysyllabic words.

In Phase Five, children will learn more graphemes and phonemes. For example, they already know 'ai' as in rain, but now they will be introduced to 'ay' as in day and 'a-e' as in make.

Alternative pronunciations for graphemes will also be introduced, e.g. 'ea' in tea, head and break.

Tricky words:

Throughout their phonics learning the children will be exposed to common irregular words that cannot be decoded phonetically. These will be given to the children in sets of varying amount throughout their time in year 1 and reception. These are words that the children are expected to read at the end of Reception and spell at the end of year one. These include:

the ; no  ;  little ;  some
